All terrain vehicles, or ATVs, may look like a great deal of fun, but they are notorious as being a great deal of danger, injuring and killing several adults and children every year. Just like any vehicle, the short answer is yes, ATVs are dangerous the same way cars, sport utility vehicles, motorcycles, or trucks are dangerous. Far too often these accidents involving ATVs come about due to improperly using the vehicle or ignorance about the vehicle. Riding an ATV does not guarantee an injury just as riding in a car does not guarantee an injury. However, certain safety precautions should be taken in order to minimize risk.

For starters, no one under the age of 16 should ride a full sized ATV. This is a recommendation put forth by the American Academy of Pediatrics and should be taken as law. No matter how matured someone under 16 may look, he or she just wouldn’t be developed enough to operate a full sized ATV. There are options for children who are interested in riding an ATV, as manufacturers make smaller models with less powerful engines for children. The would-be ATV driver should also be well-informed about the rules involved in operating such a vehicle. You can enroll in any one of many ATV driving courses in your area – make sure you do so before operating the vehicle. Finally, the rider should wear protective gear-including a helmet, gloves, boots, and eye protection-to protect their body from hazards of riding an ATV or potential accident.

A lot of ATV accidents happened with two or more people on board – that’s right, two or more people. ATVs are prone to flip over if they carry too much weight, so always remember that they are designed to carry your weight alone, and no one else’s. Like other vehicles designed for solitary driving, the presence of another passenger may distract the driver and cause him/her to wreck the ATV. Furthermore, ATVs are designed for off road driving and should not be driven on hard surfaces like concrete or asphalt. In addition to the hazards of riding on a road with cars and trucks, ATVs do not perform well on hard surfaces and are incredibly difficult to control.

Let us now discuss instances where the ATV can be used improperly in general, leading to an accident. This includes, but is not limited to driving the ATV too fast, driving it on precarious terrain, or trying to race against or drive dangerously with other ATVs. Speeding could cause your ATV to crash or flip over, as it was designed to only go a certain speed on a certain type of terrain. Unless you’re on a suicide mission, do not use your ATV for stunt driving or any similar tricks, as this is the easiest way to get into an accident.

While riding an ATV, be sure to have some sort of communication device, whether it is a walkie talkie or a cellular phone that can call for help in case of emergency.
