Searching For The Best Motorcycle Helmets
Motorcycle safety is kind of a non-issue. There’s not a lot a rider can opt for short of a suit of armor. And even then, it’s problematic. Few bother with Kevlar knee pads and jackets, but most riders will bother with a helmet. While the arms and legs and internal organs may get short shrift, the old noggin gets the full treatment. Of course, the full treatment depends on the kind of helmet that chosen. How do you find the best motorcycle helmet?
The least safe helmet is the brash, eye-catching novelty helmet. Think of the German Kaiser helmets or aerodynamic shell helmets. These are fun to see, but for the rider, they could be more hazardous than wearing no helmet at all. They lack basic padding and polymers than protect the skull and brain, so, you may as well wear a bandanna or scarf.
What might help set some parameters on your helmet search is your budget. For a decent, low-budget helmet, you could be looking at $100 minimum. For higher impact rating and more flashy helmets, the price could be two or three times the cost. These are supplied by such high-profile brands as HJC, Shoe, and Bell. Now, should you fancy a custom-made helmet, you could pay half a grand or more for the privilege.
Regardless of budget, premium, or customized, the bottom line is these helmets provide solid, certified protection. Their only difference is a matter of quality and amenities — visors, chin guards, reinforced padding. Most professional riders recommend opting for brand name helmets as they provide more than just a recognized name — they have a proven track record of safety success.
The last consideration, which tends to divide riders into two camps, is how much of the face should be covered. For traditional riders, the face should be uncovered and fully bearded. For younger riders, mystery is key — they prefer a fully covered face, complete with a visor. Some think this helps them evade identification and capture when speeding.
The best motorcycle happens to be the one that feels right to you and keeps you off the pavement.
