Before the race begins, competitors are permitted to examine the track on a bicycle or on foot. The promoter will decide if the race is to be determined on time or by laps. This must be advertised in any promotional material prior to the event. Another decision taken by the promoter is whether the race start is to be live or dead.

Each class has a different start. The only exception is if there are fewer than 5 entries in specific classes. In this case, they can start together but they will be scored separately. A mass start can only take place if the starting area is big enough. Depending on the layout of the track, it may be necessary to set up observation points to monitor for course-cutting.

Every rider is required to stop when they reach the scoring station, unless the referee states otherwise. Banners, flags, or barrels are used to set up the lanes. Color-coded signs are on display to assist riders identify their respective scoring lanes. You will only be eligible to score points or receive awards if you have completed half the laps that the winner in your class completed.
